Ines Kannoyan

Ilocano · mortal · Ilocano traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Ines Kannoyan is the beautiful maiden of Kalanutian, the beloved of the hero in Biag ni Lam-ang. Her fame draws suitors from every quarter, and their courtship gifts crowd her house; Lam-ang wins her by display of wealth and by the marvels of his charmed animals, whose feats overawe her family. Her marriage to Lam-ang is the goal of the epic's second movement, and it is the marriage rite of diving for shellfish that leads to the hero's death and eventual resurrection. She stands as the ideal of Ilocano feminine beauty in the tradition's literature.
