The Sun

Ingessana · numen · Ingessana traditional religion; continuing · numen

In Gaam cosmology the sun, tel, is the greatest of created things and the visible seat of the creator whose name it shares. It gives the daylight and orders the agricultural year, and it stands behind the institution of the 'hut of the sun' in which the section chief resides as ritual head. Because the single word tel serves for the luminary, for the act of creation, and for the creator, sources are divided over whether the sun is worshipped in its own right or venerated only as the sign of its maker; the Ingessana themselves treat the distinction as of little importance.
