This is why emperors die. The Kojiki's point is explicit: the two sisters were sent together so that the imperial line should have the blossom's beauty and the rock's endurance, and by sending the rock back Ninigi took beauty and gave up permanence for all his descendants. A creation story that explains human mortality as a single ancestor's preference in women is unusual and the registry held the sister who was kept and not the one who was returned.
