He is the enormous red-faced, long-nosed figure who leads a Japanese festival procession, and the resemblance of that mask to the tengu's is not a coincidence anyone has fully explained. Structurally he is a boundary-god: the one who is already standing at the junction when the newcomers arrive, who is asked who he is, and who then guides them in. The registry held the woman who asked the question and not the man who answered.
