Chongmyeong-buin, 'the Wise Lady', is the mortal woman whom the sky-king Cheonji-wang takes to wife in the Cheonji-wang bon-puri. After their single night together the god returns to heaven, leaving her gourd seeds and the promise of twin sons. She rears the boys, Daebyeol-wang and Sobyeol-wang, who trace their absent father by the tokens he left and by climbing the towering gourd vines that spring from his seeds. Recorded transmissions of the chant differ over her name, some calling her Bagiwang rather than Chongmyeong-buin, a variation that has drawn scholarly attention as evidence of the fluidity of the oral tradition.
