Jeongsu-nam

Jeju Island shamanism · deity · Jeju Island shamanism traditional religion; continuing · deity

Jeongsu-nam is the coarse, gluttonous herdsman of Jacheongbi's household in the Segyeong bon-puri. Lusting after her, he lures her deep into the mountains under the pretext of finding Mun-doryeong, and there attempts to force himself upon her; she kills him with a hairpin to escape. Later, needing his labour and moved by her family's reproaches, she brings the resurrection flowers of the Seocheon fields and restores him to life. When the farming offices are finally distributed, the revived Jeongsu-nam is set beneath the lovers as Ha-segyeong, the lower god of agriculture who governs cattle and the herdsmen who drive them, so that the chant enrolls even this violent servant among the tutelary gods of Jeju husbandry.
