Mun-doryeong, 'Young Master Mun', is the heavenly youth whose descent to study on earth sets the Segyeong bon-puri in motion. Jacheongbi meets him at a washing-place, is smitten, and follows him to school disguised as a boy; their long, interrupted courtship, marked by tests, deceptions and separations, forms the emotional core of the chant. In the tradition's characteristic pattern he is often the more passive and hapless of the pair, saved and reclaimed by Jacheongbi's resourcefulness. Reunited with her in heaven at last, he is enthroned as Sang-segyeong, the upper god of the grain harvest, ranked above his wife the middle goddess in the triad of farming deities.
