Alandisso Bassène

Jola · mortal · Jola traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Alandisso Bassène belongs to the transitional generation of Jola prophets who arose as French colonial power settled over the Casamance. Called by the supreme being Emitai, he is remembered as the first Diola prophet to confront colonial rule head-on, challenging both European domination and the entrenched authority of the priest-king, and summoning the community back to Emitai in the hope of renewed rainfall. His career marks the shift within the prophetic tradition from its older pre-colonial pattern toward the women-led prophecy of the twentieth century, and he is counted, with Kooliny Diabune and Alinesitoué Diatta, among the prophets whose lives frame the documented history of Diola revelation.
