Aulukumã

Kalapalo · deity · Kalapalo traditional religion; continuing · deity

Aulukumã is the twin brother of Taugi, the second of the pair of powerful beings born of the wooden woman and the jaguar. Where Taugi carries the associations of the sun, Aulukumã is aligned with the moon, and in the narratives he is the quieter, more circumspect twin who shares his brother's journeys and their joint vengeance for their mother. The two are inseparable in Kalapalo tradition, and the founding of the egitsu mortuary festival belongs to them together.
