Kalmyk · demigod · Kalmyk traditional religion; continuing · Recorded classification
Altan Cheeji, the 'Golden-Breasted', is the sage and seer of the Jangar epic, the keeper of memory and foresight at the court of Bumba. He is said to see ninety-nine years into the future and ninety-nine years into the past, and his counsel guides Jangar and the assembly of heroes at moments of crisis. His name, joining 'golden' with a word that means both 'breast' and 'memory', marks him as the living repository of knowledge among the warriors, the wise elder whose prophecy complements their strength.
