Bwénaado

Kanak · mortal · Kanak traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Bwénaado is remembered among the apical ancestors of the great chieftaincy of the Hienghène valley in the northeast of Grande Terre. In the genealogies of the region, which fold the mythic origin of the clan into remembered descent, he stands at the head of the line from which the chiefs take their authority over land and people. Little developed narrative survives around him beyond this founding role; his name is invoked chiefly as the anchor of the chieftaincy's claim to its country.
