Khan Mirgen, 'the Sovereign Marksman', is the hero of a Khakas alyptygh nymakh of some 5,114 verses, held to be at least a millennium and a half old and recorded in writing from the renowned singer Anna V. Kurbizhekova in the twentieth century. A mighty alyp and unerring archer, he defends his land and people against rival heroes; his epic shares many plots and motifs with the tale of Ay-Khuuchin, marking both as products of the shared Khakas heroic repertoire sung to the accompaniment of the chatkhan zither.
