Ot Ine, the 'fire-mother', is the personified spirit of the domestic hearth among the Khakas, envisioned as a woman who dwells in the flame and mistress of the household's fortune. She receives the first morsels of food and splashes of drink at every meal, protects the family from evil, and brings warmth, wealth and happiness; the Khakas blessing 'let white ash be your bed, let red coal be your pillow' invokes her care. Tradition names her the sister of Umay, joining the goddess of the newborn to the fire at the centre of the home.
