Abu Muslim is the legendary Islamizer to whom Khinalug's oldest mosque, the Abu Muslim or Juma Mosque on a hill at the village centre, is dedicated. Tradition holds that he preached Islam in the highland Quba region and that his mosque became the forerunner of all the village's other mosques. The figure belongs to the widespread Daghestani and eastern-Caucasian Abu Muslim legend, in which a single holy warrior-missionary is credited with the conversion of whole mountain communities; historians distinguish this legendary Islamizer from the eighth-century Abbasid revolutionary of the same name.
