Xıdır Nəbi is the most venerated of the Khinalug pirs, identified with a gas-fed 'burning' mountain some five kilometres from the village at roughly 2,600 metres. The figure derives from al-Khiḍr, the deathless Green One of Islamic tradition frequently merged with the prophet Elijah, and is invoked across Azerbaijan as a bringer of spring, plant renewal, and deliverance to those in distress. At Khinalug his cult fuses veneration of an eternal natural flame, an inheritance of the region's Zoroastrian past, with Islamic prophetology. Sources differ on whether the Khinalug Xıdır Nəbi shrine venerates the burning ground itself or the resting place of a holy man associated with it.
