Vucub Caquix

K'iche' · deity · K'iche' traditional religion; continuing · deity

Seven Macaw is a magnificent, boastful bird-being of the era before the true dawn, whose metallic eyes and gleaming jeweled teeth lead him to proclaim himself the sun, the moon, and the light of the whole world. His pretension offends the makers, and the Hero Twins are sent to humble him. Hunahpu strikes him from his nance tree with a blowgun pellet, shattering his jaw; the twins then pose as healers and, on the pretext of curing him, pry out his glittering teeth and metal eyes, so that his false radiance fades and he dies. His wife is Chimalmat and his sons are the earth-shaking giants Zipacna, maker of mountains, and Cabracan, their destroyer, both likewise brought down by the twins. Scholars connect Seven Macaw with the Principal Bird Deity of Classic Maya art and, astronomically, with the Big Dipper.
