Xpiyacoc

K'iche' · deity · K'iche' traditional religion; continuing · deity

Xpiyacoc is the primordial grandfather and diviner of the Popol Vuh, invariably named beside his consort Xmukane. The creators summon the aged pair as masters of the calendar and of divination, and it is they who cast lots with maize and tz'ite seeds to sanction the ill-fated creation of the wooden people. As the elder ancestors of the divine lineage, Xpiyacoc and Xmukane are the parents of One Hunahpu and Seven Hunahpu and thus the great-grandparents of the Hero Twins. Their titles, Grandfather and Grandmother, echo the roles of the living K'iche' aj q'ij, the calendar priests who still divine with the sacred count of days.
