The Ten Medicines, Kiowa Talyi-da-i ('Boy Medicines'), are the ten holiest bundles of the tribe, the very substance of one of the twin Half Boys, who at the close of the monster-slaying transformed himself into ten parts and gave himself to the people. Because the Kiowa word talyi ('boy') closely resembles taw-lee ('paternal grandmother'), the bundles have often been rendered into English as the 'Ten Grandmother Bundles', though Mooney's etymology shows the original sense to be 'Boy Medicines'. Each bundle was entrusted to a hereditary keeper; together the ten keepers upheld the spiritual integrity of the Kiowa, healed the sick, received oaths, and arbitrated disputes. Unlike the Sun Dance, which was suppressed, the Ten Medicines have remained in continuous veneration, and prayers and gifts are still offered to them today.
