Niyam Raja (the King of the Law)

Kondh · deity · Kondh traditional religion; continuing · deity

Niyam Raja is the paramount deity of the Dongria Kondh, a Kui-speaking sub-group who inhabit the Niyamgiri mountains of Rayagada and Kalahandi districts in southern Odisha. Regarded both as their first king and as their eternal spiritual sovereign, he is held to have created the hills and to have decreed the laws by which the community lives; the entire Niyamgiri massif is considered his kingdom, with his abode on the highest summit, Niyam Dongar, the Mountain of the Law. He is benevolent when honoured but angry when the forest law is broken, punishing those who hunt en masse or clear forest without propitiating him. Worshipped chiefly during Dussehra and the Jura harvest festival, he is represented by a sword. His cult gained wide notice during the Dongria Kondh's successful resistance to bauxite mining on Niyamgiri.
