The wolf is one of the powerful animal-people of the Distant Time and is held in a relationship of kinship and mutual respect with human hunters. Koyukon tradition treats wolves as intelligent beings whose spirit must not be insulted, governs the handling of a trapped or killed wolf with care, and preserves Distant Time narratives in which wolves acted as persons. Wolves are also linked in belief to human fortune in hunting.
