İlbis-şaytan

Kumyk · numen · Kumyk traditional religion; continuing · numen

İlbis-şaytan is a demon of Kumyk folk belief, his name combining the Turkic ilbis/albıs 'evil spirit' with the Arabic shaytan 'devil'. He belongs to the Islamic-influenced layer of Kumyk demonology together with the jinn and the shaytans, the stratum into which older Turkic malevolent spirits were reinterpreted, and figures as a tempter and sower of discord in popular narrative.
