Nawura (the Stone Country ancestral being)

Kunwinjku · deity · Kunwinjku traditional religion; continuing · deity

Nawura is a creation-period ancestral being of the Kunwinjku, associated above all with the sandstone escarpment known as the stone country (kunwarddewardde) around Gunbalanya. In the Dreaming he travelled through this rugged country, forming its rocks and waterholes, establishing sacred places and leaving law and ceremony for the people who descend from that time. He is a recognised subject of both rock painting and contemporary bark painting from the region, depicted by artists such as Djawida Nadjongorle and Robin Nganjmira, and his story is recorded among the Kunwinjku creation narratives collected by Nawakadj Nganjmirra.
