Maká

Sioux/Lakota · deity · first world · deity

Maká, the Earth, is the second of the four Superior Gods. Drawn out of Íŋyaŋ's own body when he sacrificed his blood, she is forever bound to the Rock — soil clinging to stone. Addressed as Mother/Grandmother Earth (Iná Maká, Uŋčí Maká), she is the ground of all living things; when she complained of cold and darkness, the supreme Škáŋ answered by bringing forth the Sun and ordering the alternation of day and night.
