Wóȟpe

Sioux/Lakota · deity · second world · deity

Wóȟpe, the Falling Star and Mediator (the Beautiful One), is an Associate God and the daughter of Škáŋ. As the great reconciler she harmonizes the oppositions among gods and beings; in the wind cycle she dwelt in Tȟaté's lodge, raised the Whirlwind Yumní, and became the wife of the South Wind. Walker's sources and later scholarship identify her with White Buffalo Calf Woman (Ptesáŋ Wíŋ), who came to the people, brought the Sacred Calf Pipe and its rites, and departed as a white buffalo calf — making her the patroness of the pipe and of peace.
