Kas-Buba

Lezgin · mortal · Lezgin traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Kas-Buba is the sage of the Lezgin heroic epic, an aksakal and ashug endowed with the gifts of magic, clairvoyance and limitless memory. Poet and counsellor in all the affairs of his people, he aids them with wise advice and, when enemies invade the Lezgin land, summons them to battle and fights alongside them. It is Kas-Buba who gives the childless Daglar and Tsükver the apple from which the hero Sharvili is born, names the child and remains throughout the cycle his mentor and helper. In the tiered Lezgin cosmos Kas-Buba is placed, with Sharvili, among the heroes of the fourth celestial sphere.
