Varz

Lezgin · deity · Lezgin traditional religion; continuing · deity

Varz is the Lezgin god of the moon, his name being the Lezgin word for both moon and month. He is imagined as two-faced: one face smiles upward in loyalty to the supreme god Ragh, while the other, dark face is turned toward the chthonic powers below. This ambivalence is mirrored in cult, for the Lezgins both venerated the lunar god and eyed him with mistrust and fear. Together with the sun-god Ragh and the fire-god Alpan he completes the celestial triad that scholars equate with the Selene, Helios and Zeus whom Strabo names as the leading deities of Caucasian Albania.
