Malis

Lydian · deity · mythic · deity

Malis, in Lydian Maλiš, is a goddess recovered for the Lydian pantheon through a fresh collation of the Lydian–Greek bilingual inscription from the temple of Athena at Pergamon, where her name stands opposite Greek Athena. She continues the older Anatolian goddess Maliya, known from Hittite and Lycian sources, and carries a marked vegetative character, presiding especially over wine and grain. Greek tradition preserved her name in the tale of Arachne, where Athena is called Malis, showing that the cult of Maλiš had passed into the Greek milieu; ancient sources report that the Lydian kings sponsored her worship.
