Shamharush is the crowned sultan of the jnun, chief among the great jinn-kings of Islamic magical tradition as it took root in the Maghreb. Reckoned a pious Muslim jinn who prays and judges, he presides over a court of the invisible people and can command them to release a human they have seized; petitioners therefore appeal to him to lift possession and madness. His most famous seat is the white rock-shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, perched on the pilgrim route up Jbel Toubkal in the High Atlas, where the mentally ill are still brought for cure. In him the learned lore of jinn-kingship, drawn from grimoire and talisman, fuses with the living saint-and-spirit pilgrimage culture of the mountains.
