Sidi Musa is the lord of the waters in the Gnawa spirit pantheon, his name and character drawn from the prophet Mūsā who parted the sea. He belongs to the blue cohort, and in his portion of the night liturgy adepts are wrapped in sea-blue cloth, sprinkled and perfumed, and fall into a trance in which they wade, swim or roll across the floor as though borne on the water. As master of the sea and of fresh water he is invoked for cleansing, safe passage and the ills that water carries, and his blue segment is one of the most visually distinctive movements of the ceremony.
