Ngorieru is the named chief of the adaro, the malevolent sea-spirits of San Cristoval (Makira). The adaro are conceived as man-like beings with gills behind the ears, fins for feet, a shark-like dorsal horn and a swordfish-like spear from the head; they are thought to dwell toward the sun and to travel to and from the world by sliding along rainbows and sun-showers and in waterspouts, attacking and killing fishermen by shooting flying fish at them. Ngorieru, who haunts the shore of San Cristoval, is their chief, and the flying fox is said to be his favoured food and the offering by which he and his adaro are appeased. Codrington records the adaro among the spirits and ghosts of worship of the eastern Solomons.
