Puteri Gunung Ledang

Malay · numen · Malay traditional religion; continuing · numen

Puteri Gunung Ledang is the spirit-princess of Gunung Ledang, Mount Ophir, in Johor, wooed by Sultan Mahmud Shah of Malacca. She consents to the match only on seven impossible conditions: a bridge of gold and a bridge of silver spanning the whole way from Malacca to her mountain, seven trays of mosquitoes' hearts, seven of the hearts of mites, a vat of the tears of young men and another of their areca-juice, and, last, a bowl of the blood of the sultan's own son. The final price the raja cannot bring himself to pay, and the marriage fails. Sources vary on whether she is a bidadari, a celestial nymph, or a local mountain deity.
