Sang Kelembai

Malay · numen · Malay traditional religion; continuing · numen

Sang Kelembai is a colossal ogress of Malay peninsular and Sumatran folklore whose every utterance is a curse: whatever she names, admires, or addresses is turned to stone, to fungus, or into animals. Folk etiologies attribute strangely shaped boulders, as well as monkeys and squirrels, to creatures she passed and spoke to, and the fear of her mouth underlies the widespread taboo against openly praising an infant lest harm follow the praise. She is counted among the gergasi, the giants of the forest interior, and appears under variant names such as Sang Gedembai.
