Cornhusk Earrings

Mandan · mortal · Mandan traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Cornhusk Earrings is a named ancestral figure of the Mandan corn origin tradition recorded by Alfred Bowers from his Mandan informants. When the Corn People came up from their home beneath the earth bringing the corn with them, their chief Good Furred Robe was accompanied by his brother Cornhusk Earrings and by a younger brother called No Hair on Him or Head for Rattle. The three brothers stand at the head of the corn ceremonies, among the most valued rites instituted in early Mandan times, and the sacred corn bundle of the Mandan was said, as recently as 1948, to contain the skulls of Good Furred Robe and his brothers.
