Sanene is the second of the two primordial patrons of the Maninka hunters, named in the same breath as Kontron in every donso invocation. The name is glossed from saniya, the purity of gold, and Sanene personifies the vow of chastity, honesty, and ritual cleanliness that binds the confraternity. In the founding legend Sanene shares with Kontron the killing of a child in a fit of thirst, death at God's hand, resurrection, and the oath of purity that made the pair the eternal masters of the bush. As guarantor of the hunters' oath, Sanene sanctions those who betray its terms and blesses those who keep them. Sources differ on Sanene's sex and on the exact kinship with Kontron, some traditions casting the two as brothers and others as mother and son.
