Leimarel Sidabi

Manipuri · deity · primordial · deity

Leimarel Sidabi (Leimaren) is the supreme mother-goddess of Meitei Sanamahism — the personified earth, goddess of nature and the household, and the eternal mother from whose womb all living beings are said to have come. She is consort of the supreme creator (Atingkok Maru Sidaba / Atiya Sidaba, recorded here as Salailen) and, in the dominant purana account reported by Parratt, mother of the brothers Sanamahi and Pakhangba; a parallel tradition makes her Sanamahi's foster-mother and Pakhangba's birth-mother. Her central cult is domestic: she is worshipped with Sanamahi in the first room of every Meitei house in the isaiphu (an earthen water-pitcher) with offerings of flowers, fruit, vegetables and rice. The later household goddess Emoinu/Imoinu is said to derive from her.
