God L is the richest man in the underworld and he looks it. The Princeton Vase and a long series of Late Classic painted cylinders show the same scene — the old lord on his jaguar throne, the hat, the cigar, the women with the cacao — and the Maya evidently found something funny in it, because a fair number of the vases show him being robbed, stripped or humiliated by the Hero Twins. A god of commerce who is also a figure of comedy is not an arrangement the Old World pantheons in this registry produce. He had no record here at all.
