The Itza held out on an island in a lake for a hundred and seventy-three years after Alvarado, which is the longest surviving indigenous state in the Americas by a wide margin, and their capital fell in an afternoon. Nojpetén is under the modern town of Flores; the temples the Spanish burned that morning were the last functioning Maya temples anywhere. The registry carried the tradition and not the end of it.
