The Underwater Panther
Menominee · numen · Menominee traditional religion; continuing · Recorded classification
The Underwater Panther, the great horned lynx of the lakes and rivers, is among the mightiest of the malevolent powers beneath the water. Long-tailed and horned, dwelling in the deep places and the rapids, it overturns canoes and drags the unwary down, and it is numbered among the powers that drowned the brother of Manabus and drew upon themselves his vengeance and the world-flood. It stands with the horned serpents as the perennial quarry of the Thunderers above.
