Enmesharra

Enmesharra belongs to the generation that lost. He appears in the ancestor-lists — the theogony of Enlil runs through many generations of such deities — and he is described as a ghost, a resident of the underworld, a power that once was. Some late texts have him defeated and bound, his offices taken from him, which is what his name would suggest: lord of all the me, the divine powers of civilisation, in the mouth of a god who no longer has them. The Mesopotamian pantheon keeps a surprising number of these deposed ancestors on file.
