Zababa
Mesopotamian · deity · early dynastic · deity
Zababa is the god of Kish, and Kish mattered: 'king of Kish' was a title that rulers hundreds of miles away claimed for the prestige of it, long after the city itself had stopped being dominant. He is a war god, paired with Inanna as consort — a match of the war god of a great city with the goddess of war, which reads as civic as much as mythological. Later theology pulled him toward Ninurta, as it pulled most of the warrior gods.
