Puti Bungsu is the princess at the heart of the Kaba Cindua Mato, betrothed to the Pagaruyung prince Dang Tuanku. Bundo Kanduang sends the hero Cindua Mato to bring her home as her son's bride, but the rival prince Imbang Jayo also lays claim to her, and the contest for her hand sets the epic's conflict in motion. Some recensions give her the fuller name Puti Bungo Setangkai, 'the single-stemmed flower princess.' As the destined bride her marriage seals the joining of royal houses that the narrative works to achieve.
