Puti Indo Jalito

Minangkabau · mortal · Minangkabau traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Puti Indo Jalito is the primordial ancestress of the tambo, wife of the founder Sri Maharaja Diraja and, after his death, of the sage Cati Bilang Pandai. Through her the two great strands of Minangkabau custom are born of a single womb: Datuk Ketumanggungan, her son by the king, and Datuk Perpatih nan Sabatang, her son by the sage, are maternal half-brothers. In a society reckoned through the mother she is the fount of legitimate descent, and later tradition tends to merge or confuse her with the queenly figure of Bundo Kanduang. Recensions of the tambo vary in the order of her marriages and in the paternity assigned to each son.
