Great Lady Life is the Mixe deity of conception, childbirth, and medicine, a female power presiding over the bringing-forth and preservation of life. She is invoked by midwives at conception and delivery and by curers in the healing rites that are central to Mixe religious practice, in which a person's life and health are mediated through ritual and offering. She is numbered among the major Mixe deities recorded in the ethnographic literature alongside Thunder, the Earth, and the Lord of the Underworld.
