The Moon is one of the two sacred twins at the heart of Mixe mythology, twin to the Sun. In the Mixe origin narratives the pair ascend into the heavens to become the luminaries of day and night; the Moon governs the night and the lunar month. The twinned Sun and Moon are the organising pair of Mixe cosmology, their story among the best-attested of all Mixe myths.
