Chép, honoured as Mẹ Chép or Mother Chép, is the ancestral mother of the peopled world of the Ot Ndrong. One of the recorded episodes of the cycle is a genealogical recitation titled for the descendants of Mother Chép, chanting the branching lines of kin that issue from her, the house of Rung and its heroes among them. She belongs to the primordial layer of the epic, the source of human descent rather than an actor within the adventures; sources differ on the number of intervening generations between her and the heroic age.
