Wimala

Mon · mortal · Mon traditional religion; continuing · mortal

Wimala is the younger founding prince of Hanthawaddy, brother of Thamala, sharing with him the discovery of the hamsa-crowned islet and the raising of the city that became Pegu. In the chronicle tradition the brothers fall into rivalry over the succession, and Wimala's fortunes rise and fall against Thamala's in the tale of the capital's origins. Together the pair personify the Mon claim to Pegu as a city founded under Buddhist prophecy.
