Naaba Zoungrana of Tenkodogo

Mossi · mortal · Mossi traditional religion; pre Islamic and continuing · mortal

Naaba Zoungrana is the second figure in the canonical Mossi royal genealogy, son of Ouédraogo and grandson of Yennenga. Court tradition recorded by the Larhallé Naba Yamba Tiendrébéogo and analyzed by Michel Izard and Elliott Skinner remembers him ruling from Tenkodogo, the cradle of the Mossi states. His marriage to a woman of the autochthonous Ninisi (in most versions named Pouiriketa) produced Oubri, founder of the kingdom of Ouagadougou, so that the Ouagadougou dynasty unites the conquering horsemen's line with the people of the land. He is venerated among the royal ancestors whose goodwill legitimates the naam of reigning chiefs.
