Come

Mundang · deity · Mundang traditional religion; continuing · deity

Come is the sun, and among the Mundang the solar principle is bound tightly to chieftaincy. Tradition sets a sun power among the beings ranked beneath the high god Masing, and the sun lends its name to sovereignty: of a pair of twins, who are themselves greeted as 'chiefs', the first-born is named gô-come, 'sun-chief', and the second tôbaï or gô-too. Through this nomenclature the radiance of the sun and the person of the ruler are made to mirror one another, so that kingship at Léré carries a solar cast. Sources differ on how sharply the sun is personified as an individual deity as against a venerated celestial power beneath the creator.
