Daiïru

Munduruku · numen · Munduruku traditional religion; continuing · numen

Daiïru, the armadillo, is the companion of Karusakaibö and the trickster of the Munduruku cosmogony. He is at once the creator's faithful helper and his rebellious foil: in the central creation episode Daiïru is forced into a hole in the ground, and when Karusakaibö stamps on the earth the draft blows the armadillo back out, whereupon he reports that beneath the earth lies a world mirroring this one, peopled by beings the creator then draws upward to become humankind. His burrowing thus opens the passage between the underworld and the surface. In other episodes his mischief unsettles the created order, and some narratives credit him with releasing the penned peccaries. Narrators record his name variously as Daiïru, Daydu or Reru.
