Putcha si is a spirit-mother of the Munduruku hunting cosmos, one of the guardian 'mothers' who watch over the fertility and abundance of game. She both grants and guards: hunters depend on her release of animals, but she exacts vengeance for overhunting and waste by stealing the souls of those who offend, a sanction bound up with the wider Munduruku belief that game returns to the world through its spirit mothers. She belongs to the same order of tutelary beings as the mother of the peccaries, standing behind the balance between the hunt and the renewal of the animals.
